News And Info - 2012

28th December 2012
The Silver Jubilee Vaishnodevi Shrine Board that was in proposal for quite sometime would see the coins in the denomination of Rs 25, Rs 10 and Rs 5. For the first time a coins of Rs 25 would be released as a NCLT. If news is to be believed, then the government has granted permission to strike the coins, with around 2 billion circulation strikes of Rs 5 and Rs 10. This should be good news for collectors as the coins would easily be available in circulation and one would not have to buy these from dealers.

Some lucky people start getting the CAG Set ... yet to see mine as usual I normally get it last

21st November 2012
The price of the Rs 5 Cupro Nickel Mahatma Basaweshwar has come down crashing ... at peak it was doing close to Rs 150 per coin, now its Rs 15 per coin. This goes on to show how the dealers hoard the coins they can, jack up the prices and when they have made enough profits and see the prices going down, they just sell off at whatever prices they can get ... all the dealers would have got the coins for less than Rs 6 ... hopefully the prices of other Cupro Nickels will also come down ;)

15th November 2012
The long awaited Single Coins sets from Hyderabad made way to my home, adding more joy to Diwali. As mentioned earlier the packs are beautifully done, some of the coins are nicely struck compared to circulation strikes, and some the circulation strikes were good and the UNC coins are similar quality. Overall they are great sets to have.
However looking at the secondary market, it looks like the interest in Single coin sets has weaned a bit ... there are very few sets on sale and very few takes ... compare this to earlier Single coin sets or the Private packages that sold like hot cakes ... makes me wonder it could be that most of the collectors now in market had already ordered this set directly from Mint and there are no new collectors in the market ... unlike couple of years back when there were quite a few first time collectors that had entered the market, it looks like a calm period for new comers into the market ... maybe after a few years there may be another spike in new collectors in the Indian coins...

4th November 2012
The Year is almost ending and there is still no news of the 3 coins released in 2012. They have not even been put into circulation. Also the last issue for 2012, the Silver Jubilee of Vaishno Devi Shrine, although the design was approved early in July / August, there is still no news on the Coin Release Function ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd October 2012
The Single coin set of Mother Teresa, Income Tax as well as C Subramaniam are dispatched, it looks like almost all the sets are dispatched except for Commonwealth games and Louise ... it remains to be seen if the packaging of the Louise will remain same or will be different ...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
25-September-2012
There was a function held to release the commemorative coin of Pandit Motilal Nehru. The coins are in the denomination of Rs 150 and Rs 5. See the post for more details.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24-September-2012
I also see some other sets from Hyderabad mint namely Tagore, Subramaniam and Rajendra Prasad being delivered. That makes it 5 out of 11 sets that are being dispatched. I am still awaiting for my sets.

Another observation on the Bhagat Singh sets is that on the coins the Hindi "Shaheed"  शहीद  has come out as "Shahaad" शहाद . Looks like a die clog maybe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18-September-2012
Finally the deliveries from Hyderabad mint have begun. Right now the sets being dispatched are the Shaheed Bhagat Singh and the Gur-Ta-Gaddi.

For a change the strike on the Bhagat Singh coins are excellent. The design and packaging is also very nice and refreshing.

Quite a few collectors are going in for a big disappointment. The Gur-Ta-Gaddi coin packaging has been changed. Although the packaging is great, quite a few collectors did not book [as they assumed this was rebooking] and the packaging would be same. Moreover the older set was available at Rs 200 in the market and the mint had a booking price of Rs 300 ...
This one is definitely going to craze up the scene, most dealers would not have gone in for this set as they already had stock from the previous one, most collector would not have gone for this as they would have though its a re-book with same design.

31-August-2012
The bookings for Bridadeeswarar Temple has been extended till 28-Sep-2012. Not sure why this is done, maybe to give more people from South India to book the coins, or maybe the demand is weak given the higher prices of the coin sets and the general decline in the coin market ....

17th August 2012:
Some news on Kuka Movement coin, it seems there is no end for controversy here ... Originally the coin was scheduled to be released in the year 2007 and celebrations were planned along with the 150 years of War of Independence. However the Indian Council of Historical Research gave the date of the even as 20-Apr-1872.
There was also a news release that the coin would be released by Prime Minister in the year 2010, however that was not to be the case.

News is that the coins have been minted. The design still has the date of 2007. Lets wait for some more time to see what the real picture would emerge.

27th July 2012:
A dissapointing visit to Mumbai Mint. I had been to the mint with the intention of picking up the ICMR and the Civil Aviation. However these were out of stock or whatever they needed to be given had been sold and they were not selling anything new.
The items that are still available are;
Restrikes of Dandi March [Exe/Proof/UNC]
Restrike of K Kamraj [Exe/Proof/UNC]
Restrike of 150 years of war of Independence [Exe/Proof/UNC]
Civil Aviation [Exe]
ICMR [Exe]
Mahatma Bashweshwar [Exe]
60 Years of Commonwealth [proof]
Homi Bhabha [Proof]

The sets that are from Kolkata mint that are available are;
Mother Teresa [Proof / UNC]
Tagore [Proof]

The lady at the counter mentioned that the Temple Set will never come at the counter as these are not yet minted. She was clueless about the recent issues of 60 years of Parliament single coin sets.

The somewhat good things:
In the past mint just needed an PAN card, so one could carry the PAN card of someone else and get the coins. However in this visit, the PAN is looked by the Security at the gate and the entry of the PAN number is made. The PAN is written on the back of the token. There is a camera to take photo of the visitor. So looks like the mint has made it more strict to only issue the sets of the collectors.

Visit to RBI:
Since I was in the area and didn't meet my objective, I though let me visit RBI and get some coin packets so that the day is not a total waste ... but alas, they were only issuing Rs 1 coins the day I went ... its totally random, there is no order, I still fail to understand why the RBI is so restrictive about making the coins available.

3rd July 2012:
The much awaited coin sets of Bridadeeswarar Temple are open for booking. The Price of Proof set is Rs 4475/- and UNC set at Rs 4435/-. For the advert please see the post on Coin Bookings.

23rd June 2012:
The Rs 5 coin on the occasion of 60 years of Parliament have started hitting the market. The design is same as that of the 2009 60 Years of Commonwealth Parliament except for the legend, so next time you get a coin watch is carefully, one can easily mistake this coin for the older one.

After a long wait I finally got my set of C Subramainam Set. The packaging is much better than Kolkatta mint, and the use of speed post.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

1st June 2012:
The Mumbai mint has started dispatching the C Subramainam Sets. The Kolkata mint is also dispatching the 150 years of Income Tax sets. I am yet to receive mine, but can confirm quite a few who have received it.  If you have still not received the set, keep watching the courier.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
27th May 2012:
The Kolkata mint has announced the booking of the 150 years of CAG coins set. The Proof Coin Set is priced at 4291/- and the UNC Set is priced at 3857/-
The mint is also accepting Re-Booking of the 150 years of Income Tax. The Proof Coin Set is priced at 4291/- and the UNC Set is priced at 3857/-
You can book them online or via demand draft. For the adv refer to the article on Coin Booking

25th May 2012:
A new Mule is recently found in circulation. Again by Kolkata Mint. This time the Reverse of a Normal Rs 5 coin is mated with the Reverse of Rs 5 Commonwealth games. Thus we have a coin that is without any denomination. The previous mules incorrect paring still had the denomination right. For more info see the section on error coins.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
20th May 2012:
Finally the website of Mumbai mint is now working again and one is able to book coins online. I just completed by bookings without any glitch. This does not mean that other's will not face any issues :).
Not sure why Mumbai mint is still using the older web application ... Kolkata Mint and Hyderabad mint have adopted the new we application that looks more convinient to use and track your order. There is no such facility on the older Mumbai Mint website. Good Luck with your bookings.

I still havent received my Income Tax or Subramaniam sets, if anyone of you have received it, do drop a note.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
15th May 2012:
The Mumbai Mint is issuing Re-Mint [the Kolkata mint preffered to call these Re-Strike] of
-K Kamraj
-Dandi March
-150 Years of War of Independence
Surprisingly the prices are lower than the booking for current sets. The Proof Set is priced at 3350/- and the UNC Set is priced at 2907/-
The direct effect of this is that the prices of the original sets have come down. I see quite a few dealers selling of the stock that they had horded.
Unlike the Kolkata mint that put R-2010 on the Inside Cover and the Obverse to an extent spoiling the overall package look; the Mumbai mint has done is quite neat everything is same. Except on the back where it normally says "Coins Minted by" it says "Coins Reminted by".

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
14th May 2012:
New  coins released on the occassion of 60 years of Parliament. The coins were released by President Smt Prathibha Patil. The denomination were of Rs 10 and Rs 5. For more details read the full article

1st May 2012
The Mumbai mint has announced booking for the ICMR and the Civil Aviation Coin Sets. The booking are open from 2-May-2011 to 30-Jun-2011. Booking can be done in person by dropping of a demand draft at the mint or sending the draft by post. Online bookings can be done at http://mumbaimint.in/coinbooking.aspx . Be careful when you are doing online booking, the payment gateway errors are quite a few.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
28th April 2012
The deliveries of the Single Coin set of Tagore has begun. I received my sets. It is surprising that Kolkata mint is using the services of Blue Dart rather than Speed Post. The packages is also quite different. It is not the normal Blister pack one would expect. Its more like a jewellary  box. Inside it is the coin in a plastic case. The plastic case itself is quite poor, in quite a few sets that I had ordered, it had come off. However the coins themselvers are of excellent strike for a change. Of late I was very dissapointed to see poor strike of Kolkata mint.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
20th April 2012
The Shaeed Bhagat Singh coins finally make their way to the general public. I got mine recently.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
30th March 2012
The Kolkata mint has put the Rs 5 Commemorative coin on CAG in circulation.
The mint is also celebrating 60 yrs of establishment on 31st March as Diamond Jubilee.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
1st March 2012
After a wait of nearly 4 years, the coins of Shaheed Bhagat Singh will be issued shortly for Public circulation. When the coins were originally minted in year 2008, there was quite a hue and cry over the errors in the proof set and unc sets. Amidst quite a bit of backlog, change  in coins being minted in steel, and large number of issues the Rs 5 coin never made it to general circulation.
Now the Rs 5 coins will be available for general circulation and surprise, it would still be the old design in Stainless Steel

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------
20th January 2012:
