Centre says NO to coins on Bharathi. The 131st birth anniversary of ‘Mahakavi’ Subramania Bharathi is to be celebrated on December 11, 2013. Responding to a plea made by the Madurai-based Bharathiyar Thinkers Forum (BTF) on August 30, the Department of Economic Affairs under the Union Ministry of Finance conveyed its “inability to accede to the request” after examining it in detail. Although its been 2 months since the Mumbai Mint has been issuing the "1000 Years Brihadeeswara Temple" coins from the Mint counter, the demand is still unabated. Typically the mint allows only 30 people to purchase items from the counter every day. Earlier this year, there would hardly be anyone seen around, mostly empty even at 10:00, the mint opening time. However ever since the Temple coins are being issued, there is a queue right from 8:00 AM, and after frustrating wait, so if you go later around 9:00 AM you are out of luck. The prices on the secondary market are still healthy.

The Coir Board is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee and it is expected that Coins and Stamps would be released. The finance ministry has given the permission and the coins are expected to be released in Feb 2014. The denominations are not known, but it is expected that it should be another Rs 60/- coin.

Finance Minister Shri P.Chidambaram Releases a Commemorative Coin of Rs. 20 and a Circulation Coin of Rs.5 to Mark the Culmination of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad; Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was an Indian and A Muslim; a Nationalist, Patriot and Totally Secular
Unlike the expectation of releasing a Rs 125 denomination coin, a coin of Rs 20 was released. The last Rs 20 coin was released 1989 on Birth Centenary of Jawaharlal Nehru. The recent issue maybe with the intention of putting the coin of Rs 20 into circulation in few years. It is not yet know the metal composition. Looks like its going to be Bi-Metallic instead of Silver.

Also got my hands on Die Rotation error of Mata Vaishno Devi Rs 5 coin from Hyderabad Mint. Aaagh haven't got a normal coin from the Hyderabad mint.

It appears that the Hyderabad Mint used a new Plaster and created new Mother Dies / Master Hubs.
On all the coins struck from Hyderabad Mint, the Rs 75, Rs 10, Rs 5 and Rs 2 the Platinium Jubliee contains and additional matra [Halant] below the word "m". For more details refer to the post Hyderabad Mint Single Coins Sets

The Mumbai mint is issuing the Temple Proof & UNC coins across the counter. Proof at Rs 5056 and UNC at Rs 4740. For more details see the coin booking section. Against the original issue prices of Rs 4775 and Rs 4435. Its to be seen whether this will bring down the prices of the coins in the Market. Currently the UNC is doing around 7.5 K and Proof around 8.5K.

Postman smiles on me. Got my Hyderabad Mint sets that I had ordered. Images would be updated in relevant section later.
Got the shock of my life when I opened the Civil Aviation Set, the Silver Coin had taken a flight and was sitting on top of the Rs 5 coin. So much for packaging from out mints, they can't even use the right gum. I may need to pull out the Silver coin as its stuck to gum.

Just got my Hyderabad Mint Rs 10 coin.
The strikes in general are poor compared to the Mumbai Mint.
The most surprising part is the mint mark, it can easily be mistaken for a Nodia [although we don't have Noida yet] or Mumbai.
It wouldn't surprise me if 20 - 30 years down the lane there are a bunch of guys like us debating if there was ever an issue from Hyderabad Mint.

There was a PIL by an lawyer against the release of Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins of Mata Vaishano Devi. The High Court asked the lawyer to approach the RBI.

It may be quite sometime before we can get to see the new notes. Meanwhile try and collect all the SubbaRao ones of year 2013 [if you are an inset / year wise collector] before these become rare :)

Got my new set of 2011 Definitive New Series Coinage set. The first set was issued at the Mint counters from Jan 2013 to Aug 2013. After the prices of the 1st issue went as high as Rs 1500/-; the mint came out with another UNC set. This is smaller in size compared to the first issue. It is available from the Mint counter at Rs 300/-. But yes outside collectors are at mercy of dealers and would have to buy this set at premium. Upload of images is still WIP and would get loaded into the existing section post on this topic.

Visit to Mumbai Coin Exhibition:
Initial impressions after the visit today ... a lack luster event compared to the previous years ... clearly a sign of slow down in the activity from the peak of 2 years back. There were no sellers on the street outside, a few inside near the staircase and none with briefcases in the exhibition itself ...
There was no particular theme ... mix of everything, proof, republic India, British and world coins ... some fancy stalls selling other antiques [apart from coins & stamps] ...
The prices of notes was low as was that of the proof sets ...
All six auction houses were present with stalls ...

I got my sets today. Initial impression, good strike quality. The outer package day by day shows signs of hastiness; there is excessive gumming and one has to actually pull out the inside cover from the outer cover ... the coin windows also not of exact size ...
On the proof silver coin, one of the lettering shows unusual thickness ... not sure what caused it.
I will be updating the Proof & UNC section with images shortly.

RBI has just put out a notification that the Rs 10 coins of "Silver Jubilee of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board" will by put into circulation shortly. So the news of June [see section below] that the coins would be withdrawn is less likely to gain credibility.

I was surprised to see suddenly quite a few coins of the 1969 5 Paise. This was among st a rare coins and was being sold at Rs 1000 that to in a awful condition. Suddenly this is available in tons and that to in UNC. Just goes to show what's rare and whats not ...

Finally received my Kuka Coin sets. In the Proof Silver Coin, the M mint mark has missing right leg of M and looks more like V ... it doesn't look like a die clog as typically it would leave a small mark under magnification ... I guess the punch used to put the M on the working die did not do the job well ... anyone else with similar issue? Images would be updated in the Kuka Post sometime later this week.

Double bonanza for collectors today. There is an RBI Press release that has put Rs 5 coins of 60 Years of Kolkatta Mint as well as 150 years of Birth Centenary of Swami Vivekananda into circulation. It should be some time before we can see them in circulation.

The RBI has put a press release indicating that coins celebrating Motilal Nehru would be put into circulation. One more coin to collect. However the proof & UNC set look sometime away as the older orders from Mumbai Mint are not yet fulfilled, it looks more like towards the end of the year for this booking

Got my 2 coin sets of 60 Years of Kolkata Mint today.As usual with Kolkata mint dispatch it was Blue Dart. The coins were already available from the Mint counter for quite sometime at premium. However it looks like there is very less of-take of these sets and hence the Mint began dispatch of these sets about a week back. The single coin set of Rs 60 is yet to be dispatch or received by me.

If rumors are to be believed, all the coins post 2000 would be up for re-mint/re-strikes ... so get ready to shell out quite a bit of money to lay your hands on them. As it is we have spent close to Rs 1 lac if one were to order all the coins directly from mints so far. In a way good news for collectors, but not so good for the pockets, the kind of money being charged, its a hobby that's going slowly towards the rich and elite and no longer affordable to average collectors.

New Coin Put into Circulation. The RBI announced that it will be put into circulation the Rs 5 coin commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The Reverse shall have the picture of Mata Vaishno Devi. Not begins a long wait to get these coins from circulation or buy from some dealers. Given the hype over this, it would be among-st the highest minted coin in India History.

The 60 Years of Kolkata Mint is also available from the Mint counter although at a higher price than of booking. It is strange that the Mint charges more for issuing the coins over the counter and that to a huge premium of around Rs 500. However Mumbai mints for coins over the counter actually charges Rs 100 less.

Just quickly checked the website today, it came up later in the afternoon. If a collector wants to buy one of each variety, it would cost around 76,000. Really quite a bit for ordinary mortals to invest in such a large amount. Day by Day the hobby is becoming the ambit of rich and genuine collectors are getting let down. Lets hope things will change for better.

This would be for the first time in the history of Indian Coinage that UNC sets of higher denomination are being released by 2 mints. It is also to been seen as to the Mint Mark Hyderabad Mint will use on these coins. Will it be Star.

The new year saw the dispatch of 1000 Years of Bridadeeswarar Temple Coins. There are a few who have got this set. The dispatch's have begun. The lucky ones who made the DD and gave it at the mint have their number first ... the online guys are always last to receive like me, Still haven't seen my CAG coin Set.
