10 Rupees Commemoratives - Part 2 - Bi-Metallic

This Post is Organized in 2 parts.
Part 1: Silver Coins
Part 2: Bi-Metallic Coins

After a gap of nearly 37 Years the Rs 10 coins were re-introduced in commemorative circulation. The last coin was Rs 10 Silver in 1972 on the occasion of Independence Jubilee.

2009 Homi Bhabha Birth Centenary Year
The 10 Rupees, 2009 Homi Bhabha Birth Centenary Year, depicts the Bust of Homi Bhabha. Normally most of the Centenary coins have a date of "Birth Year - Centenary Year". There being exceptions like the centenary coin of Mahatma Gandhi & Perarignar Anna, it has a date of "Birth Year - Death Year". In case of Homi Bhabha the coin has a date of 2008 - 2009. This has no meaning. If it’s the financial year being considered, even then it should have been 2009 - 2010 as Bhabha was born on 30th October 1909. The error was pointed out by several numismatists; however there is neither a clarification as to what the date means, nor a notification that this is an error and will still be in circulation. The mint details and Description are;
Mint: Bombay, Noida

Legend Home Bhabha Birth Centenary Year

There are quite a few dealers who have been mis-selling this coin saying that it’s an error coin “as the date is incorrect” and will be withdrawn and one should buy it. Although this coin was put in circulation in March - April 2010, these did not reach the hands of collectors till early 2011 as many dealers cornered the coins in anticipation that this may be withdraw

A clarification from the Department of Atomic Energy
Quote
An official at the Mumbai-based mint that created the Bhabha coin said a committee had suggested the date. “The details printed on the coin have been provided by the Scientific Information Resource Division (SIRD) of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. We were told to print the year, and did so.”
RK Sharma, an official with SIRD, said: “We have been celebrating the centenary year over 2008-2009, and hence, that is the year mentioned on the coin.”
Unquote

So does the above clarification solve the question or not, its for individuals to decide.

2010 Platinum Jubilee of Reserve Bank of India
The 10 Rupees, 2010 Platinum Jubilee of Reserve Bank of India, depicts the Tiger, Palm and Crest of RBI. This is the second commemorative of Rs 10 in Bi-Metallic. Coins of Rs 1, Rs 2, and Rs 5 were also issued for general circulation. The Coin of Rs 75 was introduced for the first time in the Proof & UNC Sets. The mint details and Description are;

Note: Amongst non-leaders there are only few themes that have multiple issues. The Independence theme that saw Silver Jubilee and 50 Years Golden Jubilee. The other issue being the Reserve Bank of India that saw 50 Years as well as 75 Years.

Interesting: A strange division. Normally when a commemorative is issued, depending on the capacity more than one mint strikes the same issue. Incase of RBI there is an interesting fact, whether this was on purpose or coincidental its for mints to tell. There were 4 coins struck in different denominations and by different mints. IE the Rs 1 was struck only from Hyderabad Mint, the Rs 2 was struck only from Kolkata Mint, the Rs 5 was struck only from Mumbai mint and the Rs 10 was struck only from Noida mint.

2012 Silver Jubilee of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board
The last coin of 2012 was to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. As with anything in India, this being amongst the first coin that had a full blown religious deity on it, was sure to cause controversy. Some PIL were filed that the religious sentiments would be hurt and the coin not be put for general circulation. However if the news is to be believed, this coin will have the highest mintage of any commemorative, with the numbers being mentioned as 1 billion.

Die Varieties: Mumbai Mint has minor die variety in clear die and dull die where the features are not clear on one of the dies uses.

Notes:
1. There was a controversy around the coins as it would hurt religious sentiments. Even a PIL was filed to have the coins withdrawn.
2. The Hyderabad Mint mark is very poor and can easily be mistaken for Mumbai if not compared side by side.
3. Quite a few coins show Die Clog error with “Silver Jubilee” missing.

The Index to All Articles is here

This Post is Organized in 2 parts.
Part 1: Silver Coins

Part 2: Bi-Metallic Coins

The first Rs 10 commemorative coin for general circulation was in the year 1969 on the occasion of Birth Centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, after this there were 2 more issues in Silver in general circulation. The 1969 Silver achieves the distinction of being the first coin in silver post independence. These are the only 3 Silver coins in the Republic India coinage that were in general circulation. Post the Silver coins were only in Proof Sets and UNC Sets. In the year 2005 the denomination was issued as definitive coins in Bi-Metallic. Subsequently the coins were also issued in commemorative.
The Coins of 1969 and 1970 were made of 80% Silver, from 1972 the metal was changed to Quaternary alloy with 50% Silver.

Although the Bombay [Mumbai] Mint had earlier released a commemorative in 1964 on Jawharlal Nehru, this was the first time a coin in Silver was struck after Independence. Its also for the first time the Mint used a different mint mark than “Diamond” that it uses for circulation strikes. It used “B” to indicate proof strike. Later when the name changed to Mumbai, it changed the proof mint mark to “M”.

Partly due controversy and partly due to heavy backlog of sets and the number of sets being released in 2009 & 2010, these coins were never put in general circulation.

Quite a few MP raised this issue in the parliament that coins of Bhagat Singh be put in regular circulation. Bowing to the demands the coins were finally put into general circulation in April 2012.
