Nabakalebara coin design gets nod

Puri, June 17 2016: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has prepared the designs for `10 and 1,000 denomination Nabakalebara commemorative coins.
According to SJTA sources, the designs, which were approved by the chief temple administrator Suresh Mohapatra and Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingh Deb, would be sent to the Centre within a couple of days.
Sources said the ten-rupee denomination coin would measure 27 mm in diametre while the 1000 rupee coin would be of 44 mm dia.
The Union Culture Ministry had decided to float the commemorative coins following which a seven-member committee was formed.
The earlier design had the images of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra as they appear during Suna Besa ritual. This was objected by Sashikanta Das, Union Economic Affairs secretary. He had said the coins, if minted in this format, would create a different impression about the Trinity among the people. So the design was disapproved.
The Union culture ministry had then written to the SJTA seeking its suggestion.
According to the revised format, the ten rupee coin will have the image of Lord Jagannat only. Though it was discussed that The Trinity will find space in the 1000 rupee coin, later sources said that only Lord Jagannath’s image will be embossed on the coin.

Bhubaneswar: In a new twist to the controversy surrounding release of commemorative coins marking Nabakalebara festival celebrated last year, oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday shot off a letter to chief minister Naveen Patnaik putting the blame for the inordinate delay on the state government.

The commemorative coins of Rs 10 and Rs 1,000 denominations were initially slated for release during the festival in July 2015.

Dharmendra wrote that the ministry of culture has been requesting the Jagannath temple management to furnish a few designs of the Lord. The culture ministry had sent letters to the temple management pursuing the matter thrice on February 11, February 24 and April 7, but the management committee has sought time, he wrote.

"In the interest of Odia sentiments on Lord Jagannath, I shall be grateful if you could kindly look into the matter and issue necessary advice the temple management committee to furnish a few designs/photos of Lord Jagannath expeditiously," Pradhan wrote to Naveen.

The BJD described Dharmendra's letter as a political gimmick. "The Union minister has been frequently writing to the chief minister for gaining political mileage. On the state government's request, the Centre had agreed to release the commemorative coins on Lord Jagannath. The state government doesn't need frequent reminders from him," said BJD spokesperson Samir Ranjan Dash.

Jagannath Temple chief administrator Suresh Mohapatra said the temple managing committee has lost interest in the commemorative coins because the festival is already over. "The committee is of the view that the coins should have been released during the festival time, which somehow did not materialize," Mohapatra told TOI

BHUBANESWAR: Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday blamed the state government for the delay in issuance of a commemorative coin of Lord Jagannath to mark the Nabakalebara festival celebrated last year.

This brings a new twist to the controversy surrounding release of the commemorative coins of Rs 10 and Rs 1000 denomination agreed to by the Centre. It was initially slated for release during the festival, celebrated once every 12 to 19 years, in July 2015.

In a letter addressed to Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, Pradhan wrote that the Ministry of Culture has been requesting the Jagannath temple management to furnish a few designs of the Lord. However, the management committee has sought time. The culture ministry had sent letters to the temple management pursuing the matter on February 11, February 24 and April 7.

"In the interest of Odia sentiments on Lord Jagannath, I shall be grateful if you could kindly look into the matter and issue necessary advice the temple management committee to furnish a few designs/photos of Lord Jagannath expeditiously. This will enable them (culture ministry) to to take further action on the matter to release the commemorative coin," Pradhan wrote to Naveen.

An expert committee had earlier submitted a design, which was rejected by the Union finance ministry on the grounds that it had feet of the trinity (Lord Jagannath and his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra) which is contrary to the limbless idols being worshiped in Puri. The state government had earlier distanced itself from the move citing that the expert panel was selected by the Centre.

With the delay in release of commemorative coin on Lord Jagannath's Nabakalebara festival, the Centre today urged the Odisha govenrment to ensure speedy furnishing of few designs and photos of the Lord for the purpose.

"In the interest of the popular Odia sentiments on Lord Jagannath, I shall be grateful if you could kindly look into the matter and issue necessary advice to the Managing Committee, Puri to furnish a few designs or photos of the Lord expeditiously," Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan wrote to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Pradhan said that early furnish of design or photo of the Lord would help release of the commemorative coins early.

The union ministry of culture had been requesting the chairman of the managing committee, Puri for the support. But, the managing committee has sought time to finalise new designs or photos of the deities, Pradhan said, adding that the ministry had written three letters in this regard.

Pradhan said the letters were written to the managing committee thrice on February 11, February 24, and April 7, 2016. The ministry has been pursuing the matter with the temple administration also, he informed the chief minister.
