New Delhi (PTI): An RTI applicant has approached the Central Information Commission for seeking details from government on whether it was planning to change the cumbersome procedure for sale of commemorative coins to collectors.

The coins, released in memory of an event or a national hero, are provided to collectors after they place an order in advance with the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL).

RTI applicant Subhash Chandra Agrawal moved CIC after the Corporation's response to his query failed to satisfy him.

"I was seeking information regarding steps taken by the government in abolishing the present cumbersome procedure of advance-booking of mint-sets due to which it gets delayed but the reply given to me has been unsatisfactory," he said.

"Even after advance booking of mint-sets, it reaches the concerned person after more than one year and it includes postal and bank charges, which make them costly for coin collectors," Agrawal said.

There were two types of mint-sets for different configurations -- proof sets and uncirculated sets.

According to data given by the Corporation, the proof set rate of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak commemorative coins is Rs 1,394 while its uncirculated set rate is Rs 739, he said adding that the face value of such coins is much lower.
