Three men were arrested from near central Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan ISBT for their alleged involvement in running an organised racket of circulating counterfeit Rs. 5 coins in the National Capital Region (NCR), police said on Sunday.
Crime Branch officer claimed 30,000 such fake coins — the face value of which was Rs. 1.50 lakh — were recovered from the possession of one Sweekar Luthra, 35, who hails from UP's Bulandshahr, Ankit, 21, from UP's Farrukhabad and Darshan Kumar, 40, a resident of Uttam Nagar.
"The arrests were made based on a tip-off that a gang led by Luthra was supplying fake coins to people in Delhi and the NCR for several months. We were told that the gang would travel from Ghaziabad to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT to deliver a huge consignment of these to a man named Pankaj on Thursday evening," an officer said.
According to police, a trap was laid near the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and, around eight pm, the accused trio was apprehended at the instance of an informer.
"They were travelling in a Chevrolet Tavera car and 30,000 fake Rs. 5 coins, kept in six jute bags, were recovered from the vehicle. Luthra has earlier been arrested and jailed for the circulation of fake coins," the officer added.
A criminal case under section 240 (delivery of Indian coin, possessed with knowledge that it is counterfeit) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been lodged against the trio.
