The government is likely to come out with a Rs 125 coin to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

The idea of a coin with an unusual value is to pay tribute to the architect of the Constitution and radical social reformer on his 125th birth anniversary next year.

Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891. His special anniversary has triggered a battle between Congress and BJP to lay claim to his legacy , with the opposition party announcing its plan for year-long celebrations while the government followed with its own schedule.

Sources said discussions are on between the finance ministry and the social justice ministry , headed by Thaawar Chand Gehlot, on the shape and value of the coin.

According to sources, the commemorative coin will carry a picture of Ambedkar with `125th birth anniversary celebrations' etched on it and the denomination embossed prominently . The government will also release a commemorative postal stamp.

Besides, the government is likely to start razing the building at 26, Alipur Road, in Delhi around October to pave the way for the construction of an Ambedkar memorial.

NEW DELHI: The government is likely to come out with a "coin of Rs 125" to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

The idea of a coin with an unusual value is to pay tribute to the architect of the Constitution and radical social reformer on his 125th birth anniversary.

Born on April 14, 1891, Ambedkar's special anniversary has triggered a political battle between Congress and BJP to lay claim to his legacy, with the opposition party announcing its plan for year-long celebrations while the government followed with its own schedule.

Sources said discussions are on between the finance ministry and the social justice ministry headed by Thaawar Chand Gehlot on the shape and value of the coin.

According to sources, the commemorative coin would carry a picture of Ambedkar with 125th birth anniversary celebrations etched on it and Rs 125 embossed prominently. The government will also release a commemorative postal stamp on Ambedkar.

Besides, the government is likely to start razing the building at 26, Alipur Road in Delhi around October to pave the ground for construction of an 'Ambedkar Memorial'. The Alipur Road bungalow is associated with the Constitution-maker as he lived here during his stay in the capital and also breathed his last in this house.

The rare political focus on Ambedkar results from his second coming as a leader, with parties toasting him to bait Scheduled Castes who form a significant voting bloc. The Modi government announced a detailed list of events to celebrate the late leader while Congress chief Sonia Gandhi led a party panel to work out the year-long Ambedkar celebrations.

The competition was evident as Rahul Gandhi led the "national launch" of the Congress programme with a visit to the Ambedkar statue in his birthplace Mhow besides addressing a public rally later in the town.

For the Centre, the release of the coin and stamp will be the high point of Ambedkar celebrations
