29-Dec-2016: Further inputs on the Ordinance that is drafted ... There will be specified fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 for continued possession of the demonetised notes. The fine will be a multiple of the number of notes found in possession beyond the permissible limit — 10 for souvenirs and 25 for the purpose of numismatics.
The limit of 25 notes is quite less. Quite a few collectors who do governor/year/inset wise would definitely have 115+ of these notes. Then there are quite a few who do fancy numbers or prefixes. And not to mention the duplicates that one keeps for exchange. So all in all looks like some relief to a collectors. At the same time, I guess the law is to catch hoarders and would go soft on collectors.

28-Dec-2016: As per the TOI Article, the Ordinance is drafted to impose penalty for holding old notes. QUOTE
NEW DELHI: The government will soon issue an ordinance imposing a penalty for possession of scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes+ after the 50-day window for depositing old notes in banks ends on December 30.Possession of the old notes will only be permitted for the purpose of research and numismatics and the measure is intended to end any prospect of a "parallel currency" continuing after the deadline.UNQUOTE
This turns out to be a very good news for the collector. One can keep the older notes that are in collection.
The other question that generally seem to be going in minds of many is will the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes create value in future or will they be worthless peice of paper
With the general caveat, one can't really predict the future ... My take on this is
There are around 67 notes of Rs 500 with Governor/year/Inset theme. Around 45 in Rs 1000 ignoring the earlier issues.
Then there are people who also collect prefix. I don't have a count, but this would be substantial.
Before I go into what will happen, if we look at the past, the Rs 1000, Rs 5000 and Rs 10,000 were demonetized as we all know in 1978. There was substantial quantity that was not returned. From a ordinary collectors point of view Rs 1000 was too much to collect, quite a few had not even seen a Rs 1000 note in their lifetimes. During 1978, there may hardly be dozens who collected such items. The grade I officers salary used to be in few hundreds.
In 1990, due to inflation, Rs 1000 meant nothing, there was interest in collecting these notes. Rs 1000 notes then came into dealers hands, initially at very low price. Today the Rs 1000 note of Sen Gupta ... or the Temple notes [as they carried the image of Brihadeeswarar temple] go routinely for Rs 10K to Rs 15K; notes in good quality far excess of Rs 30-50K. Similarly by HV Iyengar around 1.5 lacs. But B Rama Rau around Rs 30K.
The number of collectors of Notes is still substantially less than the hoard of notes that were not returned. So why did the price not come down? These are worthless piece of paper and they should be selling at Rs 100 - 200 ...
The number of Rs 5000 or Rs 10,000 notes I have seen in auctions is very minimal.
I can get into multiple theories as to why this is happening ... but that is not the question.
Coming back to the question:
The number of people who collect Rs 500 and Rs 1000 today is substantial and this is bound to grow over period. Unlike in past, hoarders know there are collectors out there. In fact quite a bit of black money is captured / stored as rare notes so that even if there is IT raid, the value can't be proved.
In the immediate 6-8 months, there will be a general scramble. Remember the hoarders can't directly approach dealers because they will be afraid to get caught. After layers of middlemen, the market will find out the demand for the notes and the supply. During this process, dealers will also discover which notes / series / years / insets / prefixes / etc are rare which are abundant. There will be price discovery in 2018 and prices will kind of firm up by 2019 and remain at that level for some time, increase / decrease along with general market.
So my prediction; immediately in next 2-6 months, dealers will try and dump the notes they are holding at 1.2 to 1.5 times the rate saying golden opportunity etc. Toward the end of 2017, things will start showing real picture. In my view the earlier issues and the latest issues will be rare, along with few inset of intermediate years.

27-Dec-2016: Just came across an interesting piece of history in India Proof/UNC Sets.
In past the Mint allowed the booking of the coins to be submitted over the counter at the mint. Once the booking was confirmed, during dispatch / delivery could also be obtained in person from the mint on producing the booking receipt. This practice was stopped in 2000's as it became difficult to manage and was restricted to only post deliveries.
It is interesting to note that the bill book used still had the denominations of Fisheries set released in 1987. The denominations then were a 2-coin set of Rs 100 and Rs 20 and Single Coin of Rs 100 and Rs 200. There is overwriting visible to make the 2-coin as 3 coin set and the Rs 100 as 2 Coin Set and Rs 20 as Rs 5 Single Coin set to enable booking of the Tourism set.

The Mata Vaishno Devi, Nehru - 125th Birth Anniversary and Benaras Hindu University Sets would be dispatched January onwards. there is some procurement related issues with the Mumbai Mint and thus it is taking some time.
On the I.G. Mint Kolkata News, this letter has been received by me as well; but has no mention of the Two Sets booked in the same order - apart from Swami Chinmayananda Birth Centenary set to be delivered by Dec 2016. A System which needs rigor, possibly also hit due to the demonetization and with a delayed start; the arrivals are further delayed.
Finally, on the New Currency Notes that we have in the market now a days, getting used to the Size of an existing 100 Rupee Note and New 500 Rupee Note, needs caution at the time of handling. The 100 Rupee is bigger than the New 500 Rupee - So beware of bundling them together :)

10-Dec-2016: Plastic Notes are back in news. Its been more than a decade that we keep hearing about the Plastic notes.
"It has been decided to print banknotes based on plastic or polymer substrate. The process of procurement has been initiated," minister of state for finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said in a written reply in Lok Sabha to a query whether RBI proposes to print plastic currency notes in place of paper ones.Recently there was controversy in UK that the plastic notes had "Beef Tallow" in them. There is general outrage and Bank of England is forced to look into this issue. Hopefully this will not derail the introduction of the notes in India

5-Dec-2016: Although I am yet to receive any of the 3 sets ordered from Kolkata Mint last September [BHEL, Tata, Swami Chinmayananda]; the Kolkata Mint was kind enough to send me a letter for what seems to be the first time to indicate that there will be a delay in dispatching the Swami Chinmayananda sets and they will be dispatched by December 2016. There is no news or letters on other sets. Hopefully I will get it before I get old. :).
And No I am not the lucky one or filed an RTI, such a letter has been dispatched by speed post to all collectors whos order is pending.

22-Nov-2016: Such is the quality of media reporting today that anything becomes a news. Times of India carried out an article both online as well as in print as to how a Rs 2000 note is listed on eBay at Rs 1.5 lacs. What the media does not understand is that one can list anything on eBay at any price. It does not mean that the item will get sold. The Rs 2000 note some idiot has listed at Rs 2 Crore. Does this mean it would get sold at that price? Nope. No way.
22-Nov-2016: If you see on 21-Oct, I had posted that there are incorrect reports in media calling genuine Rs 10 coins as fakes. I guess RBI has woken up to the damage and issued a correction via RBI Press Release that the said coins are genuine.
22-Nov-2016:
There are quite a few fake notes of Rs 2000 already in circulation. Most found are simple colored xerox. They are easy to find out. However there was another one reported today. This fake had security thread and Gandhi watermark. My guess is someone took a Rs 20 or lower denomination note and shrunk the image of Rs 2000 note and printed this on a genuine note of different denomination. Read the full Story here.

8-Nov-2016: RBI has finally put up the new note design and explained the security features of the Rs 500 and Rs 2000 note. There is no Rs 1000 note currently planned but may get introduced if needed.
8-Nov-2016: The new Rs 500 notes planned to be introduced have a very fresh design. Gandhi still is on the front, however the theme is quite different. The back is image of Red Fort. The security features of telescopic numbering continues. The design for the first time has the amount in Hindi numerals. Similarly the Rs 2000 notes planned to be introduced have Mars Orbiter or Mangal Yan on the back. Both notes also have the logo of swach bharat.
8-Nov-2016:20:35 hrs. If you are watching the Speech by Prime Minister Modi, the Rs 2000 hush hush now makes sense. From midnight today Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes are going to be discontinued and replaced by better security Rs 2000 notes. This will go a long way in unearthing black money

7-Nov-2016: Related stories on Rs 2000 note. There is surprise all around. The notes are refreshing new design, for the first time it looks like the Numerals are also in Hindi. It has 7 bleed lines.
______________________
5-Nov-2016: The Rs 2000 note looks a reality with quite a few images being circulating on FaceBook. It is surprising that there is still not news from RBI on this. Generally introduction of new denomination is followed by Gazette notification and tons of other related press releases.

25-Oct-2016: If you have read through the comments of Mr Saurab Basu and Shreyash Bhandary, the Online Counter Sale product from Kolkata Mint is looting / duping buyers. The sets on offer are at exorbitant prices. Remember most of these sets went unsold in recent auction even for Rs 2500/-, with commission and shipping it would be around Rs 3300/-. Hopefully the dealers will not take undue advantage of such act by Mint.

29-Sept-2016:
Just browsing through the recently concluded sale by Leading Auction House. The RBI Platinum Jubilee 5 coin Proof set normally is selling below Mint Issue price and one can get this set in Rs 3500 - Rs 4000 range. Inspite of this, there are generally no buyers. However the set in this leading Auction sold for Rs 16,000 + commission. This clearly indicates that there is substantial amount of shill bidding that goes on and buyer should be careful. The shill bidding may be by friends of person who are selling the set; the Auction house may or may not encourage / support. However in my view Auction House should be more proactive in identifying such things. I am not sure of this Auction House, but I did have different experience with other Auction House. Cavet Emptor.

If you are yet to book the Mata Vaishno Devi and Nehru coins, be prepared to shell out more.
In what looks to be a first, Very Strangely, the Mint has increased the price of current bookings that are open by Rs 37, 30, 31 and 25. Not sure what led to the price change, but this could be more due to change in VAT rates imposed by Maharashtra Government recently.
The Mata Vaishno Devi Proof at Rs 4555 up by 37 compared to Rs 4518
The Mata Vaishno Devi UNC at Rs 3660 up by 30 compared to Rs 3630
The Nehru Proof at Rs 3761 up by Rs 31 compared to Rs 3760
The Nehru UNC at Rs 3107 up by Rs 25 compared to Rs 3082

15-Sept-2016: The Rs 20 note with "R" inset becomes the first note issued by New Governor Urjit Patel. This would also be the first Rs 20 note with Telescopic Numbering.
15-Sept-2016: Just went through the prize realization of Imperial Auctions. There were 30 items in the Mint Sets / UNC Sets category. Most of the recent issues from 2003 till now, available for Rs 2500. Only 3 items got sold. Even after adding the Brokerage and exorbitant Rs 300 shipping, most sets would be in the range of Rs 3200. From a seller point of view, after deducting Brokerage, he would have got around Rs 2200. This is much less than the price a seller would have paid to the mint for quite a few issue. So another pointer that the rates of Proofs and UNC are going down by the day and there are very few buyers in the market.

The price for proof has come down to Rs 3013 from Rs 3700 for previous booking and for UNC has come down to Rs 2557 from Rs 3010. This may be a reflection of reduction in Silver Prices. This could also be due to poor off take of previous sets, given that there are quite a few floating in the market. Looks like the currency printing press have made a huge blunder. As per Hindu about 300 million Rs 1000 notes were printed without the security thread and hence are defective. Around 100 million have already been put into circulation and Banks have been advised to replace this whenever they come into their possession. Thats one hell of an error and that to detected after putting a huge amount into circulation.
