24-Dec-2018: The third release ceremony of Calendar year 2018 saw the release of commemorative coins of Rs 100 on Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This is the 4th Ocassion when coins were released in the year of Death on Prime Minister; earlier being 1964 Jawharlal Nehru, 1985 Indira Gandhi and 1991 Rajeev Gandhi.
This issue has only Rs 100/- non circulating denomination and there are no circulating denomination. This is after 1981 when a commemorative issue did not have a circulating denomination. Although there were few issues like 150 Years of Telecommunications, Gur Ta Gaddi, etc where circulating denominations were not put into general circulations, but they were notified and were available in Mint Sets. It looks like Governmnet is moving away from issuing commemorative coins in circulating denominations, the recent gazette notifications of Shri Guru Gobind Singh, 75 years of Tricolour in Andamans, Paika Rebellion published before Vajpayee release also don’t have circulating denomination. However Vajpayee is the first issue to be released and other are still notifications.

13-Dec-2018: Looks like December is going to end with release of 2 Coins. The already confirmed 75 Years of Tricolour in Andamans, and a Coin on Birth Anniversary of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 25-Dec. The notification for Paika Rebellion is also out and is likely to be released in early 2019.

Of late it is to be noted that the commemorative coins are only in Non-Circulation Denominations. There are no Circulation denominations notified for last 4 releases now. It is more and more getting confirmed that the Government doesn't want to take more chances in getting into controversy by releasing circulating denominations. This means an ordinary collector who goes through his daily change will not be able to collect the coins. The interest in this field is bound to go down. It would then largely remain a rich man's hobby.

29-Jul-2018: Fake coins of Rs 1000 of Nabakaebara Yatra are already finding their way into market without even the coins being invited for bookings. The strike is good and the dies are well made. This should be a reminder of the dangers in this hobby. Please be sure what you buy from market. This is also applicable for error coins that are easily make outside the mint.

The bookings are open from 16-Feb-2018 to 31-Mar-2018. It seems these days Kolkata Mint is not advertising in Times of India. They may be releasing the Adv in some other papers.

The Kolkata Mint seems to be doing fantastic job on previous bookings, that the dispatch started even before the bookings closed. There are still some outstanding dispatches for the Indo-Africa Summit. It was supposed to be completed quite sometime back by August 2017, there are still some orders that are not fulfilled. Hopefully mint will dispatch these soon.

28-Jan-2018: The reduction in taxes means that the Counter sale coin sets from Mumbai and Kolkata Mint have reduced the prices. The Kolkata Mint prices are still way high than market rates. Some of the sets listed by Mint are available with dealers for less than 1/4 the price. It is best to avoid buying any coin set from Kolkata Mint. The Mumbai mint prices are more reasonable, barring few initial issues. Coins like Mata Vaishno devi are now available from Counter sale at a price less than original issue price. See the prices on Coin Booking
